Grammaticalization potentiel of the anaphoric ten in spoken narative discourse

In my Ph.D. thesis, I examine the use of referential devices in spoken narrative discourse with predominant anaphoric reference. Special attention is paid to the relationship between two competing forms: lexical phrases containing the lexeme ten (ten-MARKED NPs) and lexical phrases not containing it (UNMARKED NPs) in repeated mentions. A primary aim of the work is (i) to identify factors favouring the use of ten-marked NPs at the expense of unmarked NPs and (ii) to explore the possibility of the lexeme ten grammaticalizing from its anaphoric use. Theoretically and methodologically I benefit mostly from the conception of discourse anaphora and the theory of grammaticalization. The referential devices are systematically explored in terms of their distribution into different classes according to a set of parameters and their values. These parameters reflect the conceptual (animacy), grammatical (syntactic function, type of clause etc.) as well as discourse characteristics of the forms and their referents (informational status of the NP in the clause, activation and persistence of the referent, etc.). The data consist of 45 short narratives produced by 15 speakers. The speakers' task was to retell three short silent-movie sketches which they had seen immediately before the recording. The Communication of Teachers in the Secondary Schools for Hearing impaired in Czech Republic

This diploma thesis deals, in a broader sense, with classroom interaction betwen students and history teachers at secondary schools for hearing impaired in the Czech Republic. In a narrower sense, it examines a pattern of teacher's language behaviour and his/her motivation when choosing relevant language means during his/her history classes. The work consists of two parts - theoretical specialized background, and practical research. The theoretical part gives an overview of the relevant specialized terminology used in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as a short insight into the development of classroom interaction between a student and a teacher at special schools and pays attention to the developmental linguo-didactic aspects in the Czech schools for hearing impaired. The practical part uses qualitative research as a means of a research method. I have observed and filmed history classes at three secondary schools for hearing impaired. As my research interests laid within the above mentioned research technique, I did not assess teaching methodology of the teachers. I focused mainly on the form of teacher's communication. Analysis of spoken Czech at the Russian speaking Ethnic

The work deals with the analysis of spoken Czech by Russian-speaking foreigners living in the Czech Republic. Based on the transcript of oral manifestations are captured and described grammatical, pronunciation and stylistic errors that occurred in their speech. It is also briefly described the history of emigration by Russian-speaking foreigners in the Czech lands and collected basic statistical and sociological data. Also is introduced problematic of language interference and bilingualism.
Particles in the spoken Czech (on the material from the Prague spoken corpus)

Particles in the Spoken Czech have been underestimated as a subject of research which have not been studied enough, even though the figures of the Prague Spoken Corpus (PSC) show that every 8 word in Spoken Czech is particle on average. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze particles compiled by PSC; the research of particles has been done both statistically and with respect to another characteristics of classification by sociolinguistic parameter, character, valency and function.
The past, present, and future of the DIALOG corpus

The DIALOG corpus is a special corpus of spoken Czech, consisting of video recordings and transcripts of television discussions. The working form of the corpus contains more than two million words. In the introductory section of this paper, we discuss the motivation that led the researchers from the Czech Language Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic to collect and analyze dialogical speech, and we also present an overview of the publications based on work with the corpus. In the second section, we provide information about turning the collected material into an electronic linguistic corpus and about the basic characteristics of the working version of the DIALOG corpus and its first public version, known as DIALOG 0.1 (http://ujc.dialogy.cz). In the concluding section, we present the anticipated schedule for releasing the corpus for public access; we also indicate some currently relevant areas of research that can benefit from using the DIALOG corpus.
